Using Clear Casting Resin

Using Clear Casting Resin

Clear casting resin is a versatile material that is ideal for using with your Iron Orchid Design moulds. It can also be poured to add a layer to items that need extra protection.

However, like all chemicals, it needs to be handled carefully and you must take measures to protect yourself when using resin. Always read the manufacturer's instructions before you start.

Materials you'll need to start your project:

Clear Casting Resin

Measuring cups

Mixing Sticks

Protective Gear (respirator, gloves, eye protection, plastic apron)

Moulds

Release Agent (if required - read manufacturer's instructions)

Objects to embed (if required)

Steps to follow BEFORE using Resin:

Read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and thoroughly.

Prepare your workspace. Have everything to hand.

Make sure your environment is well lit and ventilated.

Put on your protective respirator, gloves, eye protection and protective apron.

Protect your work surface with a plastic sheet.

How to use your Clear Resin:

Measure out your resin and hardener very carefully.

Lots of resins are a 1 to 1 ratio which is very straightforward.

Use separate cups to measure Part A and Part B.

Combine Part A and Part B in a separate cup and mix slowly to avoid bubbles. This can take between 2 - 5 minutes.

Make sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the cup as you're mixing to ensure every bit of the resin is combined.

Carefully pour your mixed resin into the mould.

If you are embedding anything into your resin, pour a layer first place your object on top and then add more resin.

Gently tap or shake the mould to release air bubbles. Iron Orchid Designs does not recommend using a heat source with their moulds to remove bubbles.

Let the resin cure for 18 - 24 hours.

Avoid moving the mould until the resin is cured.

Demould the castings!

If your castings look hazy when they come out of the moulds, simply coat them with a water based sealer to encourage transparency.

Over time, any resin can damage your moulds so bear this in mind when making castings. Release agents can be used to offer some protection.
